Creating Strong Female Characters and Powerful Female Roles in Bridge of Souls

Those who are familiar with my life, before adventure writing, will know that I have devoted a considerable part of my career to increasing equality of opportunity for those who face unfair obstacles in their attempts at self improvement.

For example, after spending years trying to highlight the inequality in opportunity for women in technology, by conducting research showing females were just as technically competent as males in technology fields (it may sound shocking but that was not always accepted!),  I found that nothing was really changing.  So I gave up my safe academic post and travelled to the Middle East, where I worked to help establish educational programmes for female students, who would otherwise have had their educational opportunities stifled within a very male dominated society.

Females Characters and Roles in Bridge of Souls

When I came to writing Bridge of Souls I was very conscious that I wanted to create strong female characters and portray powerful female role models.  I did toy with the idea of making Tavish Stewart a female character but in the end decided that instead I would have a female character save Tavish at every key point in the story, where an intervention would be needed to return him to the plot.

It is a female police sergeant who saves Tavish in chapter one and a female barrister who rescues Tavish from police custody in chapter two.  With this insight, you can look through the entire story and see where key female characters intervene to save the hero.

The Ultimate Female Role

Then of course there is the primary antagonist in the Bridge of Souls, Swiss Billionaire, Dr Nissa Ad-Dajjal.

Here I wanted to create the ultimate female role in contemporary epic adventure.  Supremely strong, independent, intelligent and having that rare combination, the ability to match her ambition.

I wrote the story around her and made sure she is always several moves ahead of every other character.

She also had to have an absolutely epic ending...  But you will have to read the story to find that out.

Who would play Nissa in a Movie?

I wrote Bridge of Souls with the intention of it making a visually compelling movie screenplay.  If that Movie ever takes place I hope that the role of Nissa will be one of the most challenging and appealing for any female actress.   Read Bridge of Souls and tell me who you think should play this ultimate female role.

Life Experience: a catalyst for inspiration and realism

“Write what you know.” ― Mark Twain Role Models for Aspiring Authors When aspiring writers look for advice on how to guide or develop their own writing they often come across the axiom “ Write what you know ”, a saying attributed to both  Twain  and  Hemingway  (I have cited Twain as he was the earlier of the two writers).  As a novice writer one can understand how life experience acted as a powerful catalyst for some writers to make their work both realistic and highly detailed.  If we take the action and espionage genre of fiction, then we can see clear examples of how individuals who enjoyed careers in the intelligence community went on to write highly successful spy novels.  Ian Fleming served in the British Navy Intelligence during the second world war and his experiences were used to create the James Bond series of spy novels.   David John Cornwell  (better known by his ...

By the sword...

I wanted a few "big fight" scenes in Bridge of Souls but I wanted to make them different from those we see in most action adventures. After 35 years of experience practicing and studying various martial arts I believe the best action is where two radically different styles clash. It allows the reader to understand and experience divergent approaches to dealing with combat. In Bridge of Souls I made a conscious effort to include a series of different action sequences that included a wide range of different weapons and different close quarter combat scenarios. In the classic sword combat set piece I thought about the question that I used to get asked all the time by students when I was teaching Japanese Sword techniques.. Who would win a match between two equally skilled fencing masters, one skilled in European 16th century techniques, the other in Japanese 16th century weapons and techniques. Katana verses Rapier .
